The Basilica was built on the site of the martyrdom of the apostle Peter, the first pope of Christendom. Constantine built the first Basilica here in the 4th century. It was demolished in the 15th century, to be replace by another, after more than 120 years of construction. Many illustrious names succeeded each other on this project: Bramante, Michelangelo, Della Porta, Fontana and Bernini, who built a magnificent Baroque monument. This key location in the History of the Church is home to innumerable works by Bernini, Cesari and Raphaël. The best known however is undoubtedly the Piéta by Michelangelo.
