The Altes Palais was built in about 1835 in the Classical style by Carl Ferdinand Langhans as a residence for Prince William who was later to become William 1st, the first German Emperor. The palace is of simple design and only the Prussian eagles crowning the roof top give any indication of its connection with the Royal Family. Once William became Emperor, he decided to remain in this palace and only used the great castle of his ancestors for ceremonies and affairs of State. Nowadays the building is an annex of the Humboldt University.
