Located on the most magnificent square of Berlin, GendarmenMarkt, the French Church was built in 1785 by Von Gontard. Along with its twin, the German Church and the theatre standing between these two places of worship, this magnificent architectural grouping is reminiscent of a Roman square. Dating originally from 1701 it was built as a Calvinist Church for the Huguenots who fled France after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. It was Frederick the Great who subsequently commissioned the addition of the tall tower and dome decorated with statues and columns which transformed the building into a Classical masterpiece.
